UCLA Health and the Los Angeles Lakers teamed up this year to launch the first Sound Body Sound Mind #TeamUCLALakers Challenge. The contest was open to all Sound Body Sound Mind programs across Los Angeles. Students submitted a short essay or video about the importance of physical fitness, physical education class and respecting their school and neighborhood environment. The winner received a trip to a Lakers’ home game and a special on-court recognition.
After receiving entries from 25 schools, UCLA Sound Body Sound Mind and the Lakers selected Thomas Starr King Middle School. Students from the school submitted more than 140 essays and videos on topics such as how the program has affected their lives, helped their efforts to engage with the community and their personal health heroes. Students received their reward March 11, when 40 students from the school’s physical education class traveled to the Lakers’ game against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
For many of the students, it was their first NBA game. Not only were they recognized during a halftime ceremony, the Lakers treated them to a thrilling 127-113 victory.
