Through collaboration between Pediatric Gastroenterology, Allergy/Immunology and Nutrition, the Pediatric Celiac Disease & Eosinophilic Esophagitis Clinic at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive care for children with allergic and immune-mediated gastrointestinal diseases. Allergic and immune-mediated gastrointestinal diseases are becoming more common in the pediatric population. Food allergies affect up to 10% of children, most often in the first one to two years of life. Toddlers, school-age children and adolescents are also at-risk for allergic and immune-mediated digestive disorders. For example, celiac disease affects approximately 1% of the population in the United States. It can be diagnosed at any age but symptoms often develop in early childhood. Eosinophilic esophagitis also seems to be on the rise, partly due to increasing recognition. Optimal diagnosis and treatment for these problems relies upon a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates an understanding of nutritional factors, the immune system and the gut microbiome.
Our clinic evaluates and treats children using a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach. Our team sees patients with a wide range of disorders including:
Available diagnostic studies include allergy testing (blood, skin, patch), breath testing (lactose, lactulose, fructose), endoscopy, radiologic studies (esophogram, gastric emptying study, swallow study) and oral food challenge. Therapy is tailored for each child and a nutritionist works closely with patients and their families when dietary education and counseling is needed.
