Alexandra and Sean Parker PHILANTHROPIC LEADERSHIP AWARD
Uniting pioneering medicine and leading-edge technology with the transformational forces of compassion and hope has enabled UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and the UCLA Children’s Discovery and Innovation Institute to redefine the landscape of pediatric care. The Kaleidoscope benefit was established five years ago to celebrate and support these world-renowned organizations and their visionary doctors, diverse researchers, and talented staff. This evening, dedicated to artistry and wonder, will help catalyze and illuminate a vibrant new era of discovery and innovation.
Inspiration, creativity, and drive are at the core of invention. The ability to boldly envision and actualize formerly unknown elements and reveal previously unseen perspectives propels humanity forward. Kaleidoscope 5’s exhibition features seven engaging installations from nine groundbreaking artists: Alex Beim, Ben Jones, Kate Parsons and Ben Vance, Ara Peterson and Jim Drain, James Turrell, Jiangmei Wu, and Akiko Yamashita. Their transcendent efforts harness the complex properties of light, skillfully manipulate real and virtual space, and utilize experimental forms of materiality to produce intriguing atmospheres that provoke unique physical and emotional responses.
Optimism and dynamism are inherent dimensions of each of the presented artworks and essential aspects of UCLA’s successful and rapidly evolving medical mission. The inspiring individuals honored at Kaleidoscope 5 and the creative souls responsible for the stunning visions on display are bright forces dedicated to ingenuity and advancement. We hope that experiencing these works and connecting with brilliant new friends and colleagues will bolster our collective resolve to continue exploring unfamiliar realms in search of promising sparks that may ultimately become revelatory sources of light.
