Divisional Fellow-Centered Meeting
Each Tuesday, all members of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases division, including faculty, fellows, microbiology lab members, ID pharmacist, and ID rotators meet for 1.5 hours with content focused on enhancing fellowship education. Conference includes: Case Conference presentations lead by the fellows regarding patients, Core Medical Knowledge presentations with content created by faculty or a Journal Club to enhance fellow's scientific review experience. Furthermore, all the patients on the inpatient service are reviewed at this conference.
Monthly Meeting with Program Director
Fellowship Program Director and fellows meet once per month to discuss feedback regarding the inpatient service, the outpatient service, teaching conferences, grantsmanship and any other concerns or questions fellows have. Once a semester, career goals are addressed during individualized career development sessions as well as a review of feedback from ACMGE milestone evaluations.
Microbiology Rotation
As part of our Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship requirement and educational experience, we make arrangements to have our first-year fellows spend two weeks rotating through the microbiology laboratory. Our fellows work closely with our Microbiology fellows and this rotation helps initiate this close partnership.
Additional Outpatient Clinics
During their second and third year fellows attend our HIV and International Adoption and Travel to enhance their clinical training.
Hospital Infection and Prevention/Control Practice Experience
Our second-year fellows participates in a two-week rotation with content created by the hospital Infection Control team including Zachary Rubin, MD and Annabelle de St. Maurice, MD, MPH. This may include an annual appointment to participate in the infection control committee. Furthermore, online course Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America/Infectious Diseases Society of America (SHEA/IDS) is available to all fellows. This fulfills ACGME requirement for Hospital Epidemiology and should be completed once during fellowship.
Antimicrobial Stewardship Practical Experience
Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in pharmacy and therapeutic subcommittee meetings.
SHEA Fellows’ Course in Hospital Epidemiology
Online course Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America/Infectious Diseases Society of America (SHEA/IDS) is available to all fellows. This fulfills ACGME requirement for Hospital Epidemiology and should be completed once during fellowship.
Fellows’ College
Fellows’ College are two half-day afternoon sessions, which take place once in the Fall and again in the Winter, on-site. Attendance is a requirement and the division help relieve their fellows of clinical duties on these afternoons. Topics covered include: QI/patient safety, grant writing, mentorship, communication, teaching, job search and negotiation, research, professionalism, and more.
UCLA Grand Rounds
Fellows are expected to attend at least 70% of weekly UCLA Grand Rounds. These are on a reoccurring schedule Fridays at 8am in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
City Wide ID Meeting
Three times a year, all faculty and fellows practicing Pediatric Infectious Diseases in southern California gather to discuss interesting cases and research. This is an ideal time to showcase our fellows clinical and research excellence and to network with others in our Pediatric Infectious Diseases community. Fellows are expected to attend and may be asked to present a clinical case and/or their research at these quarterly meetings that rotate between UCLA, CHLA, and Cedars-Sinai.
International Pediatric Infectious Diseases Rotations
May be arranged on a case by case basis. Past trainees have rotated in Brazil, Peru, Philippines and South Africa.
