Welcome to the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship program at UCLA. We are committed to training the next generation of physician scientists in neonatology. Our philosophy is to create an optimal educational experience in clinical and scholarly activity to help trainees reach their maximum potential as they begin exciting academic careers.Since its inception in 1975 and renewed leadership in 2000, the program has graduated over 60 outstanding trainees who have gone on to diverse practice settings throughout the country to continue clinical and research activity. Program graduates have joined faculty positions at renowned universities including UCSF, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, UC Davis, USC, University of Arizona, University of Utah, and Albert Einstein University.
The fellowship is designed to provide a rich clinical training experience in state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Units at the UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital as well as the UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica located near the Pacific Ocean on LA's popular West Side. Clinical programs of excellence include Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Head and whole-body cooling, ECMO, and Maternal-fetal medicine. Trainees work closely with faculty and trainee consultants representing all Pediatric subspecialties available 24 hours at both NICU sites.
Abundant opportunities exist for pursuit of scholarly activities throughout the UCLA campus including basic science and clinical and translational sciences through the UCLA Clinical and Translational Institute (CTSI). Potential mentors are identified based on trainee interests as well as mentors with strong track records of success. Individuals interested in clinical and translational research or career goals of becoming clinician educators are encouraged to enroll in available Masters programs through the CTSI.
Lastly, numerous educational opportunities exist within a highly structured educational program that includes weekly conferences encompassing relevant topics in Neonatology as well as a Pediatric Fellows Core Curriculum to ensure a smooth transition from trainee to faculty/attending.
Thank you for your interest in our program. We recognize that every individual must make important choices between academic and clinical paths as appropriate for his/her professional and family goals. We are proud to become a part of your training and hope that your positive experiences at UCLA will set the stage for a successful launch of your career!
