UCLA faculty expert advisory: National report on concussions in young athletes

UCLA Health article
On Oct. 30, the Institute of Medicine will issue a report based on a 15-month investigation into sports-related concussions sustained by young athletes. A group of 17 scientists, including UCLA's Mayumi Prins, looked at sports-related head injuries from elementary school through young adulthood.

The committee studied the causes of concussions and weighed the effectiveness of protective equipment. The group also reviewed screening, diagnosis, treatment and long-term consequences of hits to the head.

Mayumi Prins, associate professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is available for interviews after the report's embargo lifts on Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. PDT.
