UCLArts and Healing Launches Social Emotional Arts Certificate Program

CALENDAR LISTING
What:
UCLArts and Healing, which facilitates the use of the arts for mind-body wellness and healing in the community, launches a Social Emotional Arts (SEA) Certificate Program to empower educators and community arts professionals in maximizing the social-emotional benefits of arts experiences when teaching children and adolescents. UCLArts and Healing has received support for this project from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's Visual and Performing Arts Department.
According to SEA program developers, the process of creative expression can be used to deepen reflection and dialogue, which brings meaning, self-understanding, empathy, connection to others, and allows for behavior change. Moreover, engagement in the process of creative expression without expecting perfection, reduces self-judgment and anxiety that can impede learning in students.
To obtain the certificate, participants will attend eight training sessions and learn how to develop and deliver this new process-oriented arts education approach for children and adolescents in school and community settings. Participants will learn to identify and respond to trauma, work with special needs, strengthen personal presentation skills and evaluate program outcomes.
Who:
The certificate program will be taught by board-certified creative arts therapists and individuals or teams with equivalent experience. Training will be interactive and experiential, and will feature sound, rhythm, movement, and other creative approaches to group behavior management.
