Each day is a life-changing experience.

UCLA Health System has achieved its world-renowned reputation because our staff demands more of themselves. This is particularly evident in the OR. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is a facility so advanced, it's a medical breakthrough in its own right. The Santa Monica location is home to new OR facilities, as well as outpatient facilities at both locations, including Jules Stein Eye Institute. This allows us to offer OR nursing in an academic, community hospital, or outpatient setting. Our nurses face exciting challenges and high-acuity cases during each shift, while working with some of the most accomplished professionals in the field. As a result, they learn exponentially, master a sought-after skill set, and develop unparalleled confidence.

Main Operating Room

The Department of Operating Room Services Main OR at both Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and have a high attention to quality, service, and outcomes. The Department is responsible for performing elective, complex, or emergency surgical procedures for adult and pediatric patients at all hours. Patients require surgical intervention from the following surgical specialties: General, Pediatric, Neurology, Orthopedic, Head and Neck, Ophthalmology, Spine, Oncology, Cardiothoracic, Plastic/Reconstructive, Oral/Maxillofacial, Gynecology, Urology, Vascular, and Organ Transplantation.

Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and Procedure Treatment Unit (PTU)

The mission of the PTU/PACU is to provide exemplary patient care and alleviate the patient's anxiety before and after the procedure. The purpose of the PTU/PACU is to provide short-term care to the preoperative/postoperative/anesthetic patient. The PACU accepts patients from all of the surgical services and areas such as Cardiac Catheterization Labs, Radiology, MRI, Cardiopulmonary Special Procedures, Medical Procedure Unit and Pediatric/Geriatric patients who have received general, regional anesthesia or monitored anesthetic care. The PTU cares for patients requiring non-invasive or minor procedures/diagnostic care for specialties such as Dentistry, Audiology, Head & Neck, Hematology-Oncology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, and Neurology.

Surgical Observation Unit

The Surgical Observation Unit (SOU) is a unique 12-bed unit in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center that operates Monday through Saturday. The types of surgical cases vary, based on the daily surgery schedule and include post-procedural patients requiring overnight observation less than 24 hours. An autonomous environment, RNs must have at least a minimum of 2 years nursing experience and be ACLS certified.

UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute Operating Room

Located in Westwood, the world-renowned Jules Stein Operating Room, Pre-op and Post-op Nursing Units provide care to infants, children, and adults requiring ophthalmic surgery. The area consists of 5 operating suites, a preoperative evaluation suite, a PACU, and preoperative and postoperative areas, and two laser procedure rooms. The unit provides nursing care for all ophthalmologic surgical services including retina, glaucoma, cataract, strabismus, cornea, and oculoplastic specialties.
