Unity in Diversity Council
Misson/Purpose
As a system level council, the primary purpose of the Unity in Diversity Council (UID) is to assess, plan, implement and continuously improve actions toward establishing an authentic environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion for patients, trainees, and nursing staff.

Council Member Eligibility Criteria
- 2-year commitment to council members to participate in 90 minute monthly meetings
- Practiced as a registered nurse for no less than one year at the time of application at UCLA Health
- Demonstrates the ability to deal with diverse ideas and dialogue with peers for consensus building
- In good standing within the organization per Performance Evaluations (i.e. no formal disciplinary action, which excludes verbal warnings)

Workgroups
Professional Advancement in Diversity
- Support initiatives to promote HEDI value-based criteria during the Clinical Advancement process.
- Implement professional development events planned by the UID Council.
- Collaborate with CENTER and Ambulatory Nursing to incorporate UID education during new hire orientation.
- Encourage staff participation in cultural / ethnic-based professional nursing associations.
Equity Awareness and Integration
- Implement initiatives on cultural humility training for nursing to the Nurse Executive Council.
- Collaborate with UCLA community outreach programs to diverse cultures to promote intercultural awareness.
- Collaborate with health system initiatives to develop and provide resources for staff.
Healthy Practice Environment and Nurse Well-Being
- Implement initiatives to promote a workplace environment that is inclusive, respectful, and sensitive to each individual’s identity.
- Collaborate with HEDI to promote awareness of policies supporting a healthy workplace environment, free of discrimination and institutional bias.
- Organize a celebration recognizing the contributions to HEDI within the workplace.
- Collaborate with initiatives and sponsored programs (I.e., Reigniting the Spirit) that align with the goal of progressing social justice within the system.
Patient Equity
- Support an annual campaign related to health equity to improve patient access to health care.
- Support initiatives to maintain a data infrastructure to assess and advance health equity initiatives in clinical care.
- Assist with implementing staff development programming to institute clinical care rooted in cultural humility by implementing data-driven strategic programs to minimize racial, gender, and cultural bias.
Community Participation and Contribution
- Support efforts to increase nursing engagement in community-related events tailored to marginalized communities or people.
- Engage and increase community partnerships, organizations, and entities serving the community.
- Support and participate in community programs and events planned by the UID Council.
- Increase awareness of community events at UCLA Health nursing and system-wide events related to events to serve marginalized communities.
