UCLA Maternal Fetal Medicine

Cardio-Obstetrics Program

We welcome you to UCLA’s Cardio-Obstetrics program, a collaborative patient-centric program with one goal: safe moms and babies. Our specialty teams come together to optimize the health of pregnant individuals and their babies with cardiac disease before, during, and after the pregnancy and through the person’s life course.

UCLA’s Cardio-Obstetrics team is a collaborative multi-disciplinary team of experts in multiple subspecialities:

  • Maternal-fetal medicine
  • Cardiology and subspecialities
  • Anesthesiology
  • Pediatrics
  • Nursing
  • Social work
  • Translational researchers

Pregnancy is a natural stress test with a significant number of normal physiological changes that occur to many organs, including the heart, like never before. Growing a baby requires significant changes to the cardiovascular system and these include an increase in blood volume, heart rate, blood pressure, and clotting profile. These are important considerations in those with cardiac disease. Furthermore, there are adaptations to labor and delivery that must be accounted for in women with underlying cardiovascular disease.

Whether you are a patient born with heart disease, develop heart disease later in life or during pregnancy, or perhaps you carry a baby with a cardiac disease, our UCLA team is here to optimize you and your baby’s health. There is a large body of evidence that a team of dedicated specialists working collaboratively and communicating regularly can optimize your pregnancy outcomes. We specialize in taking care of those who desire to become pregnant (preconception care) or are pregnant with heart disease, of any kind. Our team of specialists have expertise in working with pregnant (or soon to be pregnant) individuals.

Conditions We Treat

Cardiovascular conditions that commonly put pregnant women at high-risk and will benefit from UCLA’s coordinated and collaborative Cardio-Obstetrics team include:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Arrhythmias
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Aortic disease
  • Cardiac transplants
  • Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • Ischemic heart disease
  • Hypertensive disorders

Our Team

Our expert team will create an individualized care plan for pre-pregnancy (preconception), your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum with a goal of a healthy mother and baby. We are focused on both immediate care coordination and long-term health of our patients through the life-course and we believe that optimized health during pregnancy is an opportune window to modulating health through the life-course. We look forward to taking care of you and your family!
