Los Angeles, CA
UCLA Health Operation Mend was established in 2007 as a partnership between UCLA Health and the United States military.
Operation Mend provides world-class surgical and medical treatment; comprehensive psychological evaluation and support; and intensive treatment programs for post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and substance use disorder. We are the only program in the nation that includes caregivers alongside their warriors as full participants in a mental health treatment program for veterans.
Being family-centered is a core value of Operation Mend and a game changer when it comes to healing. Warriors and their families from across the United States — more than 80 percent from outside of California — come to UCLA to participate in Operation Mend’s programs. They are met with utmost warmth and while here, receive extra social support through our buddy programs.
All travel, accommodations, case management, and treatment are provided at no cost to veterans and caregivers. We are entirely donor funded.
The 2022 Red, White & Denim Backyard Bash celebrates 15 years of caring for wounded warriors and their families. Our guests of honor will include more than 100 warriors and caregivers who have participated in Operation Mend programs.
Red, White & Denim will provide many opportunities, through social media and other outreach efforts surrounding the event, to address one of the program’s biggest challenges: raising awareness. We need those in the post-9/11 warrior community to know that if they are struggling with visible and invisible wounds of war, Operation Mend is just a phone call or email away.
Red, White & Denim will also raise much-needed funds for postdoctoral clinical fellowships in psychiatry and neurology, in addition to securing resources to pilot new methods of treatment for veterans struggling with trauma.
By joining us on this special night, you will support a world-class program committed to providing life-changing — and often life-saving — care and treatment for our wounded post-9/11 military service members and veterans, as well as their caregivers and families. With a recent program expansion, Operation Mend plans to treat and care for more than 1,000 new patients in the next two years.
Spending time with our warriors and caregivers, hearing their stories, and seeing their resilience is a powerful and uplifting experience. Many of these warriors who gave so much for our country were unable to leave their homes before they came into treatment with Operation Mend; this event celebrates their strength along with the program’s accomplishments over the past 15 years.
Red, White & Denim will take place at the Beverly Hills home of Todd and Dana Katz, with approximately 600 attendees expected. In keeping with the family-centered values of Operation Mend, and to ensure the comfort of all our guests, the feel of the event is casual and fun. The food, drink, and entertainment will be top-notch.
The event will run from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The formal program, which begins at 7:00 pm, will feature videos, stories from patients and caregivers, tributes to honorees, and a live auction, all followed by a fantastic musical performance.
Gary Ghazarian - Maddie Katz Humanitarian Award
The inaugural Maddie Katz Humanitarian Award will be presented to Gary Ghazarian as part of Operation Mend’s 15th Anniversary celebration. Maddie Katz was an open-hearted, loving, and incredibly philanthropic person. In addition to giving generously over the course of her life, she volunteered much of her time at her favorite charities — always with remarkable humility. She was a strong but gentle advocate for those in need, and her vision to help veterans lead to the formation of Operation Mend.
Gary Gazarian embodies so many of Maddie’s wonderful qualities. He, like Maddie, is kind and unassuming. Without being asked, Gary contributes his time, talent, and resources to advance our mission; his impact on Operation Mend is profound. Since he began volunteering with the Buddy Program in 2013, Gary has provided social support to 17 warriors. He is also a member of Operation Mend’s Board of Advisors and deeply committed to philanthropy — Maddie would be so proud.
