Reference Programs

Since 1974, our Reference programs have provided reagents for quality control and standardization in the field of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.  Our programs provide external proficiency testing services, reference DNA and cell samples, and educational challenges.

UCLA International Cell Exchange

The UCLA International Cell Exchange sends test samples to 200 laboratories around the world to assess the accuracy of HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) class I and class II typing and of KIR (Killer-cell Immunologulin-like Receptors) typing. Results by serologic and DNA methods are evaluated for class I and class II. Each laboratory can compare its results with those from other participating laboratories.  The Cell Exchange also provides human sera containing HLA-specific antibodies with the goal of evaluating laboratories' abilities to detect and identify the antibodies.

UCLA International HLA DNA Exchange

The UCLA International HLA DNA Exchange provides 6 specimens of purified DNA 6 times each year to participating laboratories to compare results of DNA-based HLA-typing methods. The results of each exchange are graded and participants receive a summary of their performance in each exchange and a complete summary of results from other participating laboratories.

UCLA DNA Reference Panels

Selected test samples from the Cell and DNA exchanges are available as individual DNA specimens or as panels.  These samples have been extensively characterized by a variety of HLA testing methods, including sequencing based typing, and can be used for reagent and test validation or for quality assurance purposes by immunogenetics and histocompatibility laboratories.  The panels listed on the attached pages group samples as basic (B) - selected to cover most HLA antigen groups for low resolution testing, standard (S) - selected for a broader range of HLA types including multiple alleles for some antigens, and deluxe (D) - selected to include many rare or unusual alleles.

Prices for each set are:

Basic Set = $500
Standard Set = $1000
Deluxe Set = $1500
