Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that excess fat and skin from the lower and upper eyelids.  Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes -- features that can make you look old and tired, or even interfere with your vision.

You are a good candidate for eyelid:

  • you are physically healthy
  • you don't smoke
  • you have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what can be accomplished through surgery
The medical conditions which make blepharoplasty more risky are thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism and Graves’ diseases, dry eyes or lack of sufficient tears, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.  If you have a detached retina or glaucoma. Check with your ophthalmologist before you have surgery.

Possible complications associated with eyelid surgery

Possible complications associated with eyelid surgery may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Temporary vision problems. Double or blurred vision may occur after undergoing eyelid surgery. This typically lasts for just a few days following the surgery.
  • Eye closure problems. Some patients may have difficulty closing their eyes when they sleep; in rare cases this condition may be permanent. This can result in dry eyes.
  • Swelling or asymmetry changes. Temporary swelling and a slight imbalance of one eye in relation to the other may occur during the healing or scarring process.
  • Ectropion. Rolling or sagging of the lower eyelid away from the eye.
