Two UCLA inventors, Drs. Y. Pierre Gobin and J.P. Wensel, were involved in the design of a revolutionary device, known as the Concentric MERCI Retrieval, that saves lives and limits disability of ischemic stroke victims. MERCI retriever is the first medical device cleared by the U.S. FDA to remove blood clots from the brain in patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. On January 26th, 2009, MERCI Retrieval System(TM) has been used in over 10,000 patients ever since its launch in 2004.
