The University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) is an alliance of the nation's leading nonprofit and academic medical centers and their affiliated hospitals focusing on delivering world class patient care. The data on patient care and outcomes is obtained through all of these hospitals to benchmark and assess the practice at the individual hospitals. In the first quarter of 2014, the stroke mortality was assessed at UCLA.

Given our demographic and geographic location and the severity of our patient population, our expected mortality was 20.49%. Our actual observed mortality was significantly less at 11.26%.

Quality Chart

This is a dramatic reduction in the expected mortality of patients at UCLA given the severity and frequency of patients that we see with acute stroke. This is a tremendous improvement in outcomes ranking. The payoff to our work in acute stroke treatment ranks UCLA #2 in the 122 hospitals involved with the University HealthSystem Consortium.
