When someone has been admitted to the hospital, they may need therapy to return to their previous level of function.  Inpatient acute care services provide physical and occupational therapy to patients of all ages and of all diagnoses.  Treatment is provided while a patient is in the hospital.  Treatment is scheduled upon receipt of an order from the referring physician.  Specialty services are provided to pediatric and neonatal intensive care (NICU) populations.

Physical Therapy (PT)

Physical therapy is used to help patients gain independence by restoring function and improving mobility.

A physical therapist will evaluate a patient's strength, range of motion, endurance, balance, and ability to perform functional mobility, such as getting into and out of bed, transferring, walking, and stair climbing, also wheelchair skills if appropriate.  Evaluation can also include an assessment of a patient's developmental skills within the pediatric population.  The physical therapist or the physical therapist assistant performs subsequent treatments.  Recommendations are also made for any durable medical equipment that a patient may need to be safe at home (cane, crutches, walker, wheelchair, etc) and for follow-up therapy services.

Occupational Therapy (OTs)

Occupational Therapists work with all ages of people who face challenges due to injury, illness or disease.

OTs may assess how a person performs their daily tasks such as bathing, dressing or grooming, by looking at such areas as strength, balance, vision, and cognition. They might suggest adaptive equipment or home modifications to improve performance and safety. OTs may also assess how a patient is able to transfer to and from the bathroom or shower, and may recommend equipment to make these tasks safer.  Family training is an important part of the hospital stay, in order for families to safely assist their loved one when they return home. Recommendations may be made for follow-up therapy.
