Be Smart About Safety

The Be Smart About Safety Program provides loss prevention and mitigation funding through the UC Office of the President. Each year, UCOP's Risk Services Office budgets a small amount to fund proactive loss prevention and loss control projects. This funding is intended to support projects that reduce the frequency and severity of potential losses in our workers' compensation program. The goal of the Be Smart About Safety (BSAS) Program is to increase safety awareness and reduce or prevent injury or illness by providing a funding mechanism for loss control programs, equipment, and training efforts.

To be considered, proposals submitted to the Injury Reduction Strategy Group (IRSG) must be loss preventative in nature. This may include, for example, safety products or equipment to reduce material handling to avoid repetitive injury claims. Costs to supplement program budgets such as general operating supplies and personal protective and safety equipment that are required by law are not eligible for this program.

How to Apply for BSAS Funds:

Applications for projects during fiscal year 2023-24 will be accepted until May 1, 2024. Please be sure to inlcude the following attachment(s):

  • Supporting Documents - Loss reports, workers compensations data, risk assessments
  • Equipment recommendation - Evaluation, hazard assessment, or other report detailing the program/equipment needed.
  • Proposals should be emailed to [email protected].

Proposals are reviewed and approved by the UCLA Health Injury Reduction Strategy Group. Applications are reviewed quarterly in July, October, January and May. The IRSG submits approved proposals to the Office of the President for final authorization. 

Funding is limited, and available on a first come, first served basis. In some cases, the committee may only be able to fund part of a loss prevention project. Proposals with insufficient information will be returned to the applicant for clarification or additional information as required. If it is determined that the proposal does not meet the requirements of the BSAS program, it will be rejected, and funding will not be provided. Additionally, applications are subject for review by all required approvers.
