Light bulb - improving use of energy. UCLA Health Sustainability.

With a growing population across the globe, the need for sustainable energy is also increasing. The United States accounts for 19% of the worlds total energy and the average American household uses 10,837kwh. There are a lot of innovative ways to reduce the amount of energy we need such as:

  • Hydroelectric
  • Geothermal
  • Wind Power
  • Solar Power
  • Bioenergy

But the most efficient way for people to reduce the amount of energy is through energy efficiency. It is as simple as remembering to turn off the lights when you leave your house. The two biggest drivers of energy usage in home are air-conditioning and heating. So what can you do to save energy? Here is a list of simple ideas:

  • Turn off all the lights when going to bed or leaving your home
  • Disconnect all Vampire Electronics when not in use.
  • Switch from Incandescent light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs
  • Replace all old appliances
  • Open your windows to let some fresh air and light into your home

What UCLA Health is Doing

UCLA Health is looking for multiple ways of improving the use of energy. From encouraging the use of stairways to the retrofitting of lights, we are looking to continuously reduce our use of energy.
