Blood-type incompatibility and other factors reduce the pool of donor candidates significantly and can extend the time a recipient remains insulin-dependent, leading to a host of other ailments. Efforts to 1) refine our understanding of antibodies that reject new tissue and 2) improve medication options will expand the organ-donor pool and increase transplant success rates.
