On December 5, 2011, medical alumni, faculty, and staff celebrated the life of Edward "Ned" Langdon, M.D., who served as dean of students from 1963-85, at his memorial in the Grand Horizon Room of the Susan G. Covel and Mitchel D. Covel, M.D., Commons at UCLA's Sunset Village. Marty Pops, M.D., former dean of students, served as the ceremonial host. Alumni eulogies were given by Benjamin Cowan, M.D. '75, Peter Greenberg, M.D. '81, Carter Newton, M.D. '73, Jack Rotenberg, M.D. '71., and Harland Winter, M.D. '74. Thomas Weisenburger, M.D. '69, presented a pictorial history and read remarks written by Sherman M. Mellinkoff, M.D., dean emeritus.
Military elements were woven into the memorial to pay tribute to Lt. Col. (Dec.) Langdon, U.S. Army, for his service to America as a member of the Medical Corps and as an aide to President Harry S. Truman. The GeffeNotes, the medical-student a cappella group, sang "The Star-Spangled Banner," and the UCLA Army ROTC presented the National Colors. Additional military honors included a gun salute, the playing of "Taps" and the Flag Ceremony.
A memorial fund has been set up in Dr. Langdon's name. For more information on giving, please contact Nushie Gharib at (310) 267-1851.
