THE NEWLY CREATED UCLA MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (MAA) ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD is presented to a graduate of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA who has made outstanding contributions to the school, to medicine and/or to society as a whole. The MAA Board of Directors has selected Timothy A. Miller, M.D. ’63, as the inaugural recipient.
Dr. Miller helped establish Operation Mend, UCLA ’s collaboration among the U.S. military, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas and private philanthropists to provide men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan with the best reconstructive surgical care the country has to offer. Dr. Miller and his colleagues have operated on 48 patients, most severely injured by roadside explosives, since the program was launched in October 2007. Other services have been added, such as transplant surgery and counseling for patients and their families. It also offers other medical specialties necessary to help make the wounded warriors whole again.
