Grants

Funding agency: National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
Grant amount: $11.65 million
Grant duration: 5 years
Principal investigator: Dr. Stephan G. Young, professor of medicine
Summary: Study addresses critical gaps in understanding of triglyceride metabolism, including the mechanisms for triglyceride hydrolysis at the surface of endothelial cells and the metabolic signaling pathways that link systemic triglyceride metabolism with terminal adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation in adipose tissue.

Funding agency: National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
Grant amount: $10.466 million
Grant duration: 5 years
Principal investigator (DCC): Dr. Robert Elashoff, professor of biostatistics
Principal investigator (CCC): Dr. Donald Tashkin, professor of medicine Summary: Grant provides continuing support for a multi-site study testing whether mycophenolate mofetil is safer and more effective than oral cyclophosphamide in treating scleroderma-related interstitial lung disease, and to develop a database, data management and analysis.

Funding agency: National Institute of General Medical Sciences
Grant amount: $9.29 million
rant duration: 5 years
Principal investigator: Dr. Jerome A. Zack, professor of medicine
Summary: This project is to determine why individual human-embryonicstem- cell lines differ in their ability to form several mature cell types. These studies are important in establishing the use of these cells for regenerative-medicine purposes.

Funding agency: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Grant amount: $6.5 million
Grant duration: 5 years
Principal investigator: Dr. Marie-Francoise Chesselet, professor of neurobiology
Summary: This study examines how high exposure to pesticides may boost individuals' risk of developing Parkinson's disease by disrupting molecular pathways and leading to the death of dopaminergic brain cells.

Funding agency: W.M. Keck Foundation
Grant amount: $1.8 million
Grant duration: 3 years
Principal investigator: Dr. James Economou, professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics Summary: The goal of this program is to study the basic biology of genetically engineered stem cells to create a cancer-killing immune system.
