THE DIVISION OF NEUROSURGERY has been designated a Department of Neurosurgery, with Neil Martin, M.D., as the first chair. “The division was designated a Department of Neurosurgery because of its significant presence in patient care, research, education and innovation,” says Gerald S. Levey, M.D., dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and vice chancellor for the UCLA Medical Sciences. “The department is one of the premier departments of neurosurgery in the country and provides leading-edge care in all of the key clinical disciplines.”
Neurosurgery at UCLA has been recognized among the top-10 programs in the country for the past 17 years by U.S.News & World Report. The decision to establish the new department was based on the faculty’s ability to provide high-quality and innovative patient care, make significant contributions to the body of neuroscience knowledge through peer-reviewed research and provide an enriched environment in which progressive training of academic neurosurgeons and neuroscientists can thrive.
