DR. GERALD A.M. FINERMAN’S CAREER has spanned nearly 50 years. During his surgical training, he worked with injured players from the Baltimore Colts and was exposed to the new orthopaedic subspeciality of joint replacement. He went on to study in England with Sir John Charnley, a pioneer of modern total hip arthroplasty.
He came to UCLA as an assistant professor in 1971 after receiving his board certification in orthopaedic surgery, and he served from 1997-2009 as chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition to his academic career, he has been the head team physician for the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he was chief medical officer for the Olympic Village at UCLA. – Ginny King Supple
