UCLA Department of Design | Media Arts announces events for winter 2011

The UCLA Department of Design | Media Arts (DMA) is offering a variety of events for the public's enjoyment this winter, including exhibitions, seminars, symposia and lectures.     

 

Events are free and take place at the UCLA Broad Art Center's New Wight Gallery (Room 1100) or EDA facility (Room 1250), unless otherwise noted. All-day parking ($10) and short-term parking (payable at pay stations) are available in Lot 3 (enter the campus at Hilgard and Westholme avenues).

Geoff McFetridge, a Los Angeles–based artist, co-founded the skateboard company Solitary Arts and launched a wallpaper and fabric company called Pottok Prints. He continues to work as a commercial designer, recently creating the graphics for the film "Where the Wild Things Are" and designing wallpaper, carpet and blankets for the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles.

Margaret Wertheim is co-director of the Institute for Figuring, an educational organization dedicated to enhancing public understanding of figures and figuring techniques. From the physics of snowflakes and the hyperbolic geometry of sea slugs to the mathematics of paper folding and graphical models of the human mind, the institute takes as its purview a complex ecology of figuring.

Patricia Olynyk is an artist and educator whose work frequently employs microscopy and biomedical imaging technologies. She is a professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

 

 

Thursday, Jan. 27

 

Felice Frankel is a science photographer who works in collaboration with scientists and engineers. Her images have been published in National Geographic, Nature, Science, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, PNAS, Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover magazine and New Scientist. She holds concurrent positions at Harvard Medical School's department of systems biology and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This exhibition features works by Oksana Chepelyk, an artist, filmmaker, curator and Fulbright researcher.

 

 

Tuesday, Feb. 15

 

Join faculty, staff and students from north and south campus at the Art|Sci quarterly mixer. The evening will feature lectures by Alfred Vendl, an award-winning chemist and documentary filmmaker, and Diane Gromala, a media artist and Art|Sci fall 2011 artist-in-residence.

Marko Peljhan is an associate professor at UC Santa Barbara and co-director of the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts. He currently serves on the Strategic Council for the Information Society of the Republic of Slovenia.

Morten Søndergaard is an associate professor at the Copenhagen Institute of Technology and an independent media art curator. DIYbio is an organization dedicated to making biology an accessible pursuit for citizen scientists, amateur biologists and biological engineers who value openness and safety.
