UCLA researchers present latest findings on aging, age-related issues

WHAT:
At a special conference sponsored by the UCLA Center on Aging and the UCLA Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology, leading UCLA researchers will present their latest findings on aging and age-related issues, including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, estrogen therapy, social interaction, depression and anxiety, alcohol and drug use, and much more. The program will include both speakers and poster research sessions. WHO: Fernando Torres-Gil, associate dean of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, will deliver the conference's keynote address, "The Politics of Aging: Clinton, McCain, Obama and Baby Boomer Retirement." Other conference speakers include:

  • Laurence Rubenstein, professor of geriatrics: "Preventing Falls in Older Californians"
  • Debra Saliba, assistant professor of geriatrics and director of UCLA's Borun Center for Gerontological Research: "Listening to Nursing Home Patients: They Said It Wouldn't Work"
  • Michael V. Sofroniew, professor of neurobiology: "The Surprising Capacity for the Nervous System to Reorganize After Injury"
  • George Bartzokis, professor of neurology and director of UCLA's Memory Disorders and Alzheimer's Disease Clinic: "Brain Myelin and Aging: Implications for Preventing and Treating Alzheimer's Disease"
  • Kathryn A. Atchison, D.D.S., professor of public health and community dentistry: "Assuring Oral Health for the Elderly"
