Dr. Maria Ines Boechat (Pacific Palisades), professor of radiology and pediatrics in the Department of Radiological Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has been selected for the 2009-2010 class of fellows in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine.

ELAM is the only national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for leadership at academic health centers. The class of 53 fellows includes members from the fields of medicine, dentistry and public health.

Among her list of achievements, Boechat is the current chair on the Board of Directors of the Society for Pediatric Radiology; an Honorary Member of the European Society for Pediatric Radiology; and served as president of the Society for Pediatric Radiology in 2008 and the American Association for Women Radiologists in 2000. She works on issues of gender equity and diversity within the University of California as vice-chair of the University of California Affirmative Action and Diversity Committee, and will serve as chair in the next academic year.

Boechat grew up in Brazil, where she graduated from medical school at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in 1974, and completed her diagnostic radiology training at the Institute of Radiology in Rio de Janeiro. She trained in pediatric radiology both at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston and UCLA, where she has been since 1982. She has served as chief of Pediatric Imaging and director of the Fellowship Program in Pediatric Radiology at UCLA since 1986.

Boechat is married to Dr. Vicente Gilsanz, a pediatric radiologist at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. The couple has three children, Paola, Diego and Monica.
