Nursing Volunteer Accelerated Summer Program

The application is now open for our Accelerated Summer Program. 

To apply:

  1. Complete the application.
  2. Save the application as a PDF (save as ASP: Last Name, First Name, for example ASP: Smith, John).
  3. Email the application to nursingvolunteer@mednet.ucla.edu. In the subject line, include ASP: Last Name, First Name
  4. Applications will be accepted February 20 - March 16.
  5. All applications will be reviewed once the application cycle closes on March 16, 2020.

The Accelerated Summer Program is designed for nursing students that attend college outside of the Los Angeles Metropolitan area but have summer residence in Southern California. This high intensity program will give volunteers the opportunity to complete a minimum of 100 hours over a 10 week program across diverse patient populations and departments. The program requires volunteers to complete a minimum of 12 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours. 

Job Description

As a Nursing Volunteer, you will provide: one to one companionship for patients that need more observation, assist nursing staff with patient care (baths, beds, feeding, ambulation), observe procedures, shadow nursing staff, perform audits, participate in unit based projects, answer call lights and phones, assist families and visitors as needed, etc. Please note that this is NOT a one to one nursing clinical preceptorship and you will not be allowed to perform nursing skills such as: IV placement/therapy, Blood Glucose Checks, Medication Administration, etc. The experience is to provide you with an opportunity to gain additional insight to the role of nursing.

Eligibility Criteria

If you answered YES to all the following questions, you are eligible to apply.

  1. Are you currently attending nursing school outside of LA County, Orange County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and Ventura County?
  2. Will you have residence within LA County, Orange County, or Ventura County during your participation in the program? (We do not provide housing.)
  3. Will you have reliable transportation to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center?
  4. Will you be able to attend one full day of orientation between the end of May-early June?
  5. Can you provide a transcript from your school to confirm that you are a nursing student?
  6. Will you be able to complete the following health requirements prior to orientation? Please refer to our Health Requirements page for more details.
    1. QuantiFERON Gold blood test or t-spot blood test
      1. If previously tested positive for TB, you must submit proof of ONE negative chest x-ray AND one of the following: positive TB test, QuantiFERON Gold blood test, or t-spot blood test
      2. Proof of TWO MMR vaccinations or ONE positive MMR titer
      3. Proof of TWO Varicella vaccinations or ONE positive Varicella titer
  7. Will you be able to receive a Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Supprt (BLS) for Healthcare Providers? Please make sure it does not expire before September 1st.
