Frequently Asked Questions

Application Packet

Who is eligible to apply?

  • High school sophomores and juniors 
  • Must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program
  • Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual granted deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

How do I obtain an application?
Applications will be available via the Pre-Med Summer Scholar website December 2019.

Is there a fee to participate in the program?
Yes. The program fee is $1000.

If I participated in the Pre-Med Summer Scholar Program in the past, may I apply again this year?
No.

When are applications due?
February 21, 2020 (Friday). Mailed applications must be postmarked by the due date to be considered for review.

Can the application packet be dropped off?
Yes, applications may be dropped off in the Volunteer Services office Monday-Friday during office hours, 9am - 4pm.

Can I mail a part of the packet while I wait for my transcript or recommendations?
No, the packet must be COMPLETE (application, essay, program acknowledgement, transcript, and recommendations). Incomplete packets will not be considered. 

I submitted my application packet. What happens next?
We will notify you via email that your application has been received and is being reviewed.

When do I find out if I am accepted?
Notifications will be emailed in April 2020.

Requirement Questions

Once I am accepted into the program, what requirements am I expected to fulfill?
Complete a number of online trainings and obtain mandatory immunizations. Further instructions will be given after acceptance to the program.

What if I cannot attend the Check In Day? What if I am not available for all the program dates?
You will not be considered and/or will be dropped from the program.

What if I cannot obtain the required immunizations?
For the safety of our patients and those taking care of our patients, all staff and volunteers are required to obtain the proper immunizations. If you are unable to provide proof of your immunity, you will not be able to participate in the program.

Does the Pre-Med Summer Scholar Program provide the health clearances?
No, you must make arrangements with your own physician.

What does the fee cover?
Uniform, CPR training, some refreshments, certificate, booking and tours, and other program fees.

When are fees due?
Total balance (non-refundable) is due on the day of Check-In Day, Saturday, May 2, 2020.    

Fees: The cost for the program is $1000 and due on Check-In Day, Saturday, May 2, 2020. All payments should be made by cash or check (payable to UC Regents).

Program Questions

Can I expect to round or shadow physicians?

No. Liability and patient confidentiality do not allow us to follow physicians during their patient care rounds. 

What if I am sick?
One absence will be allowed. Certificate of completion will not be issued if there is an absence. 

May I select any department to volunteer in?
No, areas will be assigned.

May I receive class credit for this?
No, this program does not offer class/course credit.

Other

How are participants selected? Is it first-come, first-served?
The Pre-Med Summer Scholar Team takes in to consideration the combination of GPA, 2 required recommendations and essays. Applications received early in the application period are not necessarily chosen for the program.

What if I am not accepted in to the program?
You will have the option to join the General Student Volunteer Program.

Does this program provide student housing for the week?
This program is NOT a "summer camp-like" series - overnight accommodations or housing for the week is not included and the Summer Scholar is expected to make arrangements to attend each individual scheduled date.

Do you provide parking?
No, there is limited street metered parking or paid lots. We recommend being dropped off, using a reputable transportation service, or taking public transportation.

Do you provide transportation to the hospital?
No.

Do you provide a letter of recommendation?

No. However, a certificate of completion will be available upon completion of the program.
