Positions Available

Postdoctoral Scholar and/or Research Project Scientist

The Cornea Genetics Lab focuses on identifying and characterizing the genetic basis of the corneal dystrophies, a group of inherited disorders of the cornea that lead to loss of corneal clarity, and developing therapeutic approaches to treat the corneal dystrophies. This is accomplished by using cell based methods (including the use of primary and immortalized corneal endothelial cells) and in vivo experiments using mouse models of inherited corneal disorders.

One or two Postdoctoral Scholar and/or Research Project Scientist positions are available in the Cornea Genetics Laboratory at the Stein Eye Institute on the University of California, Los Angeles campus. Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D, be self-motivated, demonstrate a record of research achievement and have a strong interest in translational research that involves integrating clinical findings with basic science research.

For the first available position, candidates will work on AAV gene therapy projects using mouse models of corneal dystrophies. A background in working with mouse models of ocular diseases, knowledge regarding generating transgenic mouse models, experience in AAV gene therapy for ocular diseases, experience in performing intraocular injections in mice, and familiarity with OCT imaging of mouse ocular structures are preferred skills, but are not required to apply.

For the second available position, candidates will work on AAV gene therapy projects targeting the corneal dystrophies in preparation for IND filing with the FDA. A background in immunology and AAV gene therapy-related immunoassay development are strongly preferred. Experience with mouse models of disease and digital PCR are a plus.

Undergraduate Volunteer Researcher

Part-time volunteer undergraduate research positions are available in the Cornea Genetics Laboratory at the Stein Eye Institute on the University of California, Los Angeles campus. The candidate will have a strong interest in learning and performing translational and basic science research under the guidance of lab mentors. While no previous research experience is required, a solid academic background of basic cell biology, biochemistry, and lab fundamentals is desirable. Also, candidates who are able to commit to at least 2 years of part-time research will be given the strongest consideration.
