Dr. Fang Wei's research is currently focused on the real-time non-invasive monitoring of oncogenic mutations in human cancer patients by Electric Field Induced Release and Measurement (EFIRM). EFIRM is a multiplexing electrochemical sensor that integrates exosome isolation with on-chip exosomal biomarker release and measurement, and can detect and monitor progressive oncogene mutations in human cancer patients, in both circulatory and salivary exosomes. Specifically, Wei's lab is studying human EGFR mutations in lung cancer patients, and the preliminary research shows EFIRM technology can accurately detect two common EGFR mutations in paired malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and saliva exosome.
