Dr. Guido Eibl has been interested in pancreatic research since 1996. Initially, he studied the pathophysiology and experimental therapeutics in acute pancreatitis. After joining UCLA in 2000 Eibl directed his research towards pancreatic cancer. For more than 15 years now, his main research interest continues to be the study of pancreatic cancer, in particular the role of inflammation in cancer development and progression. He initially studied the role of eicosanoids and cyclooxygenases as targets for pancreatic cancer therapy and from these studies Eibl became interested in the anti-inflammatory role of fish oil and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for pancreatic cancer prevention and therapy. He is also involved in projects studying the efficacy of natural compounds for pancreatic cancer prevention and therapy.

For the past five years Eibl has been interested in the link between obesity and cancer development. He found that a diet high in fats and calories leads to obesity in mice with insulin resistance similar to humans and accelerates pancreatic cancer development in a genetically-engineered mouse model of pancreatic cancer. He currently is investigating interventional strategies to reduce obesity-associated adipose tissue inflammation and pancreatic cancer incidence. These studies are now funded by a Program Project Grant.
