Mina S. Sedrak
Mina S. Sedrak, MD, MS, FASCO, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He serves as Director of the UCLA Center for Cancer and Aging and Director of Cancer Control & Survivorship Research at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Prior to joining UCLA, Sedrak served as Deputy Director of the Center for Cancer and Aging at City of Hope (2017–2023) and as Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research (2016–2023). He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago (2006) and his MD, with honors, from Rush Medical College (2010), where he received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. He completed residency in Internal Medicine (2013) and fellowship in Hematology-Oncology (2016) at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned a master’s degree in Health Policy Research (2015). He joined UCLA in 2023.
Sedrak is an internationally recognized physician scientist and breast medical oncologist whose work focuses on the intersection of cancer and aging. He leads a research program that integrates aging biology with cancer science to define how the aging environment shapes tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence, and how cancer and its treatments accelerate aging. His research defines the mechanisms by which cancer therapies drive biological aging and develops precise, biology driven strategies to prevent or mitigate these effects. By linking molecular mechanisms of aging to key health outcomes, including physical function, cognition, and skeletal muscle health, this work aims to identify strategies that extend healthspan and reduce the burden of chronic diseases in cancer survivors.
Sedrak has received international recognition for his scientific contributions, including the King Hussein Cancer Research Award (2025), the Susan G. Komen Rising Star Award (2024), and the 40 Under 40 in Cancer Award (2023). His work has been supported by multiple National Institutes of Health awards, including the NIA Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Award in Aging (2022), the NIA GEMSSTAR Award (2019), and the NCI Paul Calabresi Award for Clinical Oncology (2017). He has maintained continuous NIH funding since 2019.
In addition to his research, Sedrak is committed to mentoring and building the next generation of physician-scientists and leaders in cancer and aging. He serves as Chair of the ASCO Clinical Research Committee, Vice Chair of the Alliance Cancer in the Older Adult Committee, and Co-Chair of the Analytics Core for the Cancer and Aging Research Group, where he advances cross-disciplinary collaboration and supports the development of early- and mid-career investigators.
