Spiritual Care for Cancer Patients
Spiritual Well-being
A cancer diagnosis not only impacts our physical bodies and sense of well-being, it can also affect one’s understanding of life’s meaning and our spiritual foundation.
The Latin root of the word spiritus means “breath.” What breathes life into your life? For some, it’s traditional faith or ritual. For others, it’s family, nature or a beloved pet. At the Simms/Mann Center for Integrative Oncology, we recognize that a cancer journey can shift what gives us meaning. Our inter-faith chaplains and chaplain interns walk alongside patients, loved ones and caregivers, offering a calm, compassionate presence when the big questions arise.
All spiritual care services at the Simms/Mann Center are provided free of charge for UCLA Health oncology patients.
Spiritual Care Support Services
Our Spiritual Care team provides:
- Spiritual support in the infusion clinics while you’re receiving treatment
- Individual spiritual support or counseling by appointment
- Telephone support for those who are homebound or can’t easily travel
- A chaplain who can join a patient or family member at a medical appointment
- A monthly group called Circle of Reflection, led by a chaplain, that explores spiritual themes. It’s open to patients and family, and welcoming to all beliefs.
- Collaboration with the psychosocial team — sometimes we offer joint sessions for deeper or combined support.
