Special Enrollment offers another chance to get health insurance in 2021

Open Enrollment is typically the one time each year when you can update your health care coverage to increase your benefits, lower your premiums and make sure your UCLA Health physicians are covered.

But this year, in an effort to make health care more accessible during the pandemic, President Joe Biden has established a Special Enrollment Period from February 15 - May 15, 2021 for Americans who get their health insurance through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace or Covered California. This Special Enrollment does not apply to those who receive health coverage through their employers.

What’s the deadline?

To secure health insurance, you’ll have to act within the Special Enrollment period: February 15 – May 15, 2021.

If you don’t enroll by May 15, you won’t be able to make a switch unless you go through what’s known as a “qualifying event“ -- for example, switching jobs or having a baby.
