UCLA Health a top performer in annual assessments of patient care quality
Long-standing excellence reflects focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
UCLA Health was once again listed as one of the nation’s best in a broad assessment of excellence in hospital-based patient care released on July 31, 2023.
UCLA Health placed #1 in California and in Los Angeles* in the annual best hospitals rankings and ratings by U.S. News & World Report. For the 34th consecutive year, UCLA Health appeared on the national honor roll, a distinction reserved this year for only 22 hospitals among more than 4,500 evaluated across 15 specialties and 21 common procedures and conditions.
UCLA Health garnered top-10 rankings in 13 specialty areas. They are: ear, nose and throat (#3); gastroenterology/gastrointestinal surgery (#3); geriatrics (#3); cancer (#4); pulmonology and lung surgery (#4); ophthalmology (#5); psychiatry (#5); diabetes and endocrinology (#6); neurology and neurosurgery (#6); orthopaedics (#7); obstetrics and gynecology (#8); rheumatology (#9), and urology (#10).
UCLA Health was designated “high-performing” relative to other hospitals in treating patients 65 and older in 21 common procedures and conditions. Among them are various cancers, hip and knee replacement, heart attack and bypass surgery, stroke and diabetes.
In addition to the U.S. News evaluation, UCLA Health also consistently performs very well in a variety of assessments of quality and safety conducted by independent publications, accreditation bodies, advocacy groups and disease-specific organizations using a wide range of methodologies.
“I’m extraordinarily proud of the UCLA Health physicians, nurses, health care professionals, trainees, support staff and volunteers who demonstrate their dedication and compassion to patients and families every day,” said Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System. “The world-class patient care we provide is informed by the latest medical, scientific and technological innovations and a continuous pursuit of excellence.”
For the first time this year, U.S. News included 22 hospitals instead of 20 on the honor roll and did not list them in ranked order. U.S. News said an ordinal ranking “obscures the fact that all of the honor roll hospitals have attained the highest standard of care in the nation.”
U.S. News said that hospitals awarded a “best” designation “excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience.”
UCLA Health offers a comprehensive network of primary and specialty care services at more than 260 clinics across Southern California and the Central Coast and at four world-class hospitals – Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA on the university’s main campus in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center.
