Aravinth Karunanandaa, MD

Dr. Aravinth Karunanandaa is a Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, specializing in catheter-based treatment of congenital heart disease in children and adults. His clinical interests include complex congenital cardiac interventions, transcatheter valve therapies, pulmonary vascular interventions, and the development of new technologies to improve the care of patients with congenital heart disease.

Dr. Karunanandaa earned his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine before completing his pediatric residency and chief residency at Levine Children’s Hospital. He subsequently completed fellowship training in Pediatric Cardiology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the primary Children’s Hospital for University of Southern California. He completed a two-year advanced fellowship training in Pediatric Interventional Cardiology at Boston Children’s Hospital, the primary teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

His research has focused on congenital heart disease and catheter-based therapies, including transcatheter PDA closure in premature infants, invasive hemodynamics in single-ventricle heart disease, novel intracardiac interventions, and the application of artificial intelligence to cardiovascular medicine. His work has resulted in peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings, including the Pediatric and Interventional Cardiovascular Society symposium (PICS), Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Innovations and Congenital, Structural, and Valvular Heart Disease Interventions (CSI) America.

In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Karunanandaa is particularly interested in medical innovation and the intersection of interventional cardiology, artificial intelligence, and medical technology. He aims to develop and translate new technologies that improve procedural decision-making, clinical workflows, and outcomes for patients
