Brendan Y. Shi, MD

Dr. Brendan Y. Shi is a fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow surgeon and Assistant Professor of orthopaedic surgery at UCLA. He specializes in minimally invasive and open treatment of all conditions of the shoulder and elbow, including arthritis, rotator cuff tears, instability, and fractures. He has particular expertise in rotator cuff repair and shoulder replacement, including complex/revision shoulder replacement.

Dr. Shi graduated cum laude with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Yale University. He then completed medical school at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine followed by residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCLA. After residency, Dr. Shi completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute/Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Shi is dedicated to pursuing research to improve outcomes for his patients. He has been awarded research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Orthopaedic Research Education Foundation (OREF) to support his work. In 2023, he received the Richard Kyle, MD, OREF National Resident Champion Award for his research on augmenting rotator cuff repairs. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals and has presented his work at both national and international conferences. His current research focuses on optimizing outcomes and minimizing complications after reverse shoulder replacement. 

Most importantly, Dr. Shi is committed to the patient experience. He believes in respecting each patient’s autonomy, tailoring treatment to individual needs, and communicating clearly so patients fully understand their options. His goal is to help his patients return to the activities they value most, whether through non-surgical or surgical modalities.

Dr. Shi currently sees patients in the UCLA orthopaedic offices in Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles.
