About

Following graduation from the UCLA School of Medicine in 1985, I completed a General Surgery residency at UCLA in 1992. I remained on the UCLA faculty, serving as Chief of Surgery at the Wadsworth VA Medical Center and was the first Surgical and Perioperative Care Service Line Director for the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. During this time, together with the Division of Clinical Nutrition, I started the UCLA Bariatric Surgery program.

In 2003, I was appointed Chairman of GI and Endocrine Surgery at UT Southwestern School of Medicine in Dallas. In 2010, I also became the Chairman of the Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering. I left UTSW in 2012 to become a Deputy Editor at JAMA, a position I held until 2021.

I returned to UCLA in 2018 where I now focus on providing patient care and performing research.
