Jose Angel Negrete Manriquez, MD, MPP

Dr. Jose A. Negrete Manriquez is a board-certified internal medicine physician practicing with the UCLA Hospitalist Downtown Cohort at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital and Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles. He serves as a Health Sciences Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Negrete Manriquez provides evidence-based, patient-centered care to diverse and underserved populations, with a clinical focus on hospital medicine, medical education, and health equity.

Dr. Negrete Manriquez completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UC Davis, where he was recognized as the Intern of the Year and received the Diversity Champion Award from the Department of Internal Medicine. During residency, he served as Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement (DICE) Leadership Committee. He participated in the Transforming Education and Community Health (TEACH) Program, which was dedicated to caring for hospitalized marginalized communities who were primary care patients at Sacramento County Clinic. He participated in the Medical Education, Hospitalist, and Research Tracks throughout residency. He also earned the People’s Choice Award for his research presentation at the UC Davis Department of Internal Medicine Research Forum. His scholarly work has been published in leading journals, including Academic Medicine, The American Journal of Surgery, BMC Medical Education, The Hospitalist, and The Journal of Graduate Medical Education. His research interests include health equity, medical education, and hospital medicine.

Dr. Negrete Manriquez received his Doctor of Medicine from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as part of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and Programs in Medical Education – Leadership and Advocacy (PRIME-LA) medical education programs. He was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Gold Research Graduation Awards. He also earned a Master of Public Policy from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, where he received departmental honors for his applied policy project on border health justice at the US-Mexico border. His earlier academic work includes a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Biology from UC Davis, where he helped manage a student-run free clinic in Knights Landing—a clinic serving predominantly Spanish-speaking uninsured farmworker communities.

Raised in the agricultural fields of rural Mexico and California’s Central Valley, Dr. Negrete Manriquez’s experiences inspired his lifelong commitment to advancing health equity and serving underserved communities. From leading a free rural health clinic in college to co-chairing diversity and health equity initiatives in medical school and residency, he has dedicated his career to mentorship, advocacy, and caring for marginalized populations. As a UCLA faculty member, he continues to address the disproportionate shortage of physicians in areas like South LA and the Central Valley of California through service and advocacy. Outside of medicine, he enjoys weightlifting, playing sports, and spending time with his wife and two children.
