About

Dr. Nejad's office telephone number is 310-267-5577.

Mitra Nejad, MD is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is Board Certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology and now specializes in advanced surgical procedures for cataracts and laser vision correction, but continues to practice general ophthalmology including comprehensive eye exams and screening for conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Nejad graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Physiological Sciences from UCLA and earned her MD from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She completed her internship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, then ophthalmology training at UCLA Stein Eye Institute, where she remained on staff after completion of her residency. During her first year of practice, she did additional post-graduate training in the field of refractive surgery, gaining proficiency refractive surgery procedures, including LASIK, as well as the management of rare, complicated disorders. In fact, she was one of the first physicians at UCLA to perform SmILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) surgery. During cataract surgery, Dr. Nejad utilizes the full spectrum of the latest technology available for treatment of cataracts including femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, advanced technology lenses (toric, multifocal, and extended-depth-of-field), as well as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) at the time of cataract surgery.

Dr. Nejad was inspired to pursue a career in ophthalmology after having had refractive surgery herself just before starting medical school. It is only fitting that she now strives to provide the same-life changing experience for all her patients. She fiercely believes in the importance of ocular health for her patients' overall well-being and in the significant role good vision plays in quality of life. Dr. Nejad speaks both Spanish and Farsi fluently allowing her to communicate with many of her non-English speaking patients and generate that level of trust and ease that is especially important during eye surgery.

In addition to teaching medical students at the David Geffen School for Medicine at UCLA, Dr. Nejad trains the current Stein Eye Institute residents in cataract surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. She has contributed to the medical school ophthalmology curriculum and serves on the UCLA residency education and selection committees. She also enjoys volunteering her time with the UCLA mobile clinic and a number of global eye health initiatives, as well as mentoring UCLA undergraduates interest pursuing careers in ocular health. Dr. Nejad is also actively involved in clinical research projects and has a number of publications in major journals, including the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society.

Having been a UCLA student, housestaff or faculty since she was 18 years old, Dr. Nejad is an avid Bruin sports fan. She loves international travel, especially to hiking destinations, but tries to avoid planning trips around March- just in case the UCLA Basketball team makes an unexpected run for the title.
