About
Dr. Steven Applebaum is a hematologist and medical oncologist who sees patients with all types of cancer and blood disorders in the UCLA Health Pasadena office. He has practiced in the office for more than 20 years, and has a specialized interest in research and enrolling patients in clinical trials.
Dr. Applebaum received his medical degree from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He then completed both his internal medicine residency and his hematology and medical oncology fellowship at Harbor – UCLA Medical Center. He earlier earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from University of California, San Diego. He is board certified in hematology and medical oncology.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Applebaum is an associate clinical professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
When he’s not working, Dr. Applebaum enjoys training for and running marathons, reading, and spending time with his family.

Every medical practice should run this well. From the moment I walked into the reception area to the moment I left the office, every person I encountered treated me with kindness, dignity and good humor. The person who drew blood should teach everyone else how to do this. Zero pain. And of course, Dr. Applebaum is in a league all his own with respect to skills, demeanor and his ability to bring comfort and confidence to a difficult and stressful time.

Dr. was his usual self: on time, friendly, comforting, listens well and takes time to answer my questions and explains well. He interprets my bloodwork results and explains how values may not be as bad news as one thinks, that some results vacillate. He monitors my labwork results and makes one confident that he’ll catch a problem if it arises.

Started right in time (early health check too!). Dr. Applebaum always starts with me reciting my recent health treatments, etc., which involves me as a ‘team’ member, which I like. He laid out the tissue testing and how that influences treatment choices. My wife was able to join by phone, so her questions could also be answered. Had my next scheduled appt before I left!
