About

Dr. Drew Moghanaki, Professor, is Chief of the Thoracic Oncology Service in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He is also the Stanley Iezman and Nancy Stark Endowed Chair in Thoracic Radiation Oncology Research. Dr. Moghanaki is a member of the UCLA Lung Cancer Executive Committee and specializes in treating patients with lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. His area of expertise is in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), magnetic resonance guided radiation therapy (MRgRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and other advanced techniques in radiation therapy.

Dr. Moghanaki’s primary area of academic interest is in multi-disciplinary management of lung cancer. Dr. Moghanaki holds a joint appointment with the Veterans Health Administration where he directs patient care and over $50 million in lung cancer implementation and research initiatives. He is co-director of the VA Greater Los Angeles Lung Precision Oncology Program and national co-chair of the VA’s Lung Precision Oncology Program Biomarker Committee. He directed the VA Partnership to Increase Access to Lung Screening (2017-2022) and is co-chair of the phase III VA Lung Cancer Surgery or Stereotactic Radiotherapy (VALOR) randomized clinical trial.

Dr. Moghanaki is a graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and was a recipient of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship. He completed an internship in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, residency in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania, and master’s degree in Epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health. He mentors and collaborates with clinicians at multiple academic institutions and is frequently invited to give lectures at scientific conferences around the world. He has published multiple textbook chapters, review articles, and scientific papers; is a scientific grants reviewer for federal and non-profit research funding agencies. He is also a member, advisor, and chair of multiple committees for national organizations that include the American Cancer Society, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Radiation Oncology, Radiosurgery Society, Veterans Health Administration, Lungevity Foundation, GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
