UCLA Health hospitals rank in Top 5 in nation.
Annual assessment reflects broad excellence.
UCLA Health hospitals ranked in the top 5 nationally in a closely watched annual assessment published by U.S. News & World Report on July 25, 2022.
For 33 consecutive years, UCLA Health has earned coveted placement on the U.S. News national honor roll, which names only 20 hospitals that provide the highest-quality care across multiple areas.
UCLA Health garnered top-10 rankings in 11 specialty areas. They are: ear, nose and throat (#2); gastroenterology/gastrointestinal surgery (#3); cancer (#5); diabetes and endocrinology (#5); geriatrics (#5); ophthalmology (#5); orthopaedics (#5); pulmonology and lung surgery (#5); psychiatry (#6); obstetrics and gynecology (#8); and rheumatology (#9).
UCLA Health also was designated “high performing” in 17 procedures and conditions treated, including hip replacement, cancer, heart and back surgeries, diabetes and stroke.
“This broad and sustained excellence reflects the unwavering dedication and immense skill of our physicians, nurses, health care professionals and support staff,” said Johnese Spisso, president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System.
“Being among the best in the country requires continually striving for improvement to enhance all aspects of patient care,” Spisso said. “I’m proud of the dedication and commitment of our team in pursuit of excellence in providing world-class care with compassion to patients who come to UCLA Health from near and far.”
U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions treated. The methodology includes a variety of measures such as level of nursing care, patient experience and complication rates. It also factors in data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association and professional organizations.
“The hospitals named to the U.S. News Honor Roll excel across numerous specialties and service lines,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “When patients and their medical professionals are considering their options for care, the rankings are designed to help them identify hospitals that are superior in the kind of care they may need.”
UCLA Health comprises four hospitals on two campuses — Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and the UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital on the university’s main campus in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center — and more than 250 community clinics throughout Southern California. It also includes the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
