Internal Medicine Residency Program

Community & Events

You’ll hear it again and again: our UCLA community – and the amazing people who make it up – are what make our program what it is. See for yourself with some of our many pictures!

Intern Orientation

We kick off the year by welcoming the new interns through a week long orientation. This includes a variety of social events during the weekend and throughout the evenings, as well as hospital orientations, meet and greets with the older classes and program leadership, and even a scavenger hunt.

Fall Retreat

All residents are excused from clinical duties for one day during the fall for our annual Fall Retreat. The morning includes program updates, resident development sessions specific to each PGY year (i.e., “how to find a mentor and succeed as a mentee”), and various breakout groups. In the afternoon, we head outside for games and fun in the sun.

hAPDy hour

In addition to the numerous social events organized by each firm during their respective +1 weeks, we host weekly hAPDy hours with program leadership in the weeks leading up to Fall Retreat for more mingling and bonding.

Match Day

The celebrations run all day long on fellowship Match Day! This year, we had a “matcha match day” celebration during the morning, a social lunch, and then a happy hour in the evening.

Spring Retreat

We have a 2 ½ day long retreat from Wednesday through Friday every May. The entire residency program heads out to Lake Arrowhead for a variety of structured and unstructured programming focused on bonding, programmatic improvement, and personal development. Highlights include skit night, the band performance by our very own “The Ultrasounds,” pickleball, and much more.

R2 Boot Camp

R2 boot camp is specially designed to help with the transition to senioring. It takes place at the end of intern year and includes a full protected day of programming (think simulation sessions, “residents as leaders” workshops, advice panels with seasoned seniors, etc).

Graduation

We end the year with our R3 graduation. It’s always a special (and bittersweet) time as we celebrate our residents and wish them well on the next chapter of their lives and careers.
