Training Experiences

The Fellow’s clinical training experiences will revolve around patient encounters associated with a variety of services at UCLA Health, Clare|Matrix Recovery Center, and allcove Beach Cities. Within UCLA Health, the Fellow’s clinical training experiences will occur within two services: UC-LEND Clinic and the Gender Health Program.

  • The University of California Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (UC-LEND) Clinic is a renowned multidisciplinary service for families and individuals with ADHD, autism, and related neurodevelopmental disabilities offered via UCLA Health. The UC-LEND Clinic is affiliated with a variety of primary care clinics across Los Angeles County, including Burbank, Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Santa Clarita. Most of the services provided by the UC-LEND Clinic are conducted via telehealth visits. Fellows will receive training in conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations that include the assessment of various neurodevelopmental disorders and other co-occurring psychiatric conditions and providing shorter-term evidence-based psychotherapy (15-20 sessions). Fellows will have approximately 8-12 hours per week of clinical training experiences in UC-LEND.
  • Gender Health Program (GHP) – a renowned multidisciplinary health service specializing in the medical and mental health care of children, adolescents and adults experiencing gender dysphoria. Fellows will receive training in conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations that include the assessment of gender dysphoria and other co-occurring psychiatric conditions, providing shorter- term evidence-based psychotherapy (15-20 sessions), composing letters of support for gender-affirming medical care, and conducting cognitive-behavioral group psychotherapy. Fellows will be trained on parameters of interdisciplinary gender health care for adults, adolescents and children per Standards of Care (Version 8) set by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). 8 Fellows will have approximately 3-7 hours per week of clinical training experiences in GHP.

Clinical training experiences that occur with UCLA Health community partners will occur at Clare|Matrix Recovery Center in Santa Monica, CA, and allcove Beach Cities in Redondo, CA.

  • Clare|Matrix Recovery Center is a substance use non-profit treatment organization for adults with services including a residential treatment center, an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and individual outpatient psychotherapy. Fellows will receive training in conducting evaluation of substance use disorders and co-morbid mental health conditions, conducting group and individual intervention with patients along the substance use treatment continuum, and training and supervision in a widely-used evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral therapy focused on substance use (ie, The Matrix Model ®). Fellows will also be trained to meet behavioral health treatment provision standards of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). As registered Psychological Associates, Fellows will also be eligible for and be enrolled as Drug-Medi-Cal providers within the Short Doyle/Medi-Cal (SD/MC) claims processing system under the California Department of Health Care Services’ (DHCS) Drug Medi-Cal-Organized Delivery System (DMC-ODS). This unique designation will allow Fellows the opportunity to receive supervised experience submitting billing for their clinical services offered at Clare|Matrix Recovery Center, a Drug Medi-Cal approved and certified provider. Fellows will have 16 hours per week of clinical training experiences at Clare|Matrix with on-site delegate clinical supervision available.
  • allcove Beach Cities is an interdisciplinary health drop-in center for adolescents and young adults (AYA), aged 12 to 25, in Redondo Beach, CA. allcove Beach Cities offers mental health, substance use, medical, and life skills services to AYA 9 from its local communities within Service Provision Area (SPA 8), including Torrance and South Los Angeles. Fellows will receive training in assessment and screening, conducting brief face-to-face mental health and substance use intervention to youth (and their family), psychological consultation/brief intervention, and developing mental health group programming for AYA. Fellows will have 4 hours per week of clinical training experiences at allcove Beach Cities with onsite clinical supervision available.
