Janice Chan, DO
Hometown: Daly City, California
Medical School: Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Residency: LA General Medical Center/USC
Why I chose UCLA: I really liked the faculty and the fellows on the day of my interview since everyone was nice and approachable. The faculty cares about our education and believes that our education comes first so the program is not fellow dependent. I liked that there is a variety of research at UCLA that I can explore since I wasn't sure what my research interest was before starting fellowship.
Research Interest: I am interested in technology use in youths with type 1 diabetes. My current research is looking at whether fingersticks prior to initiating continuous glucose monitor(CGM) correlates with CGM use and A1c after starting CGM in youths with public insurance.
Non-research Interest: I love eating and trying different restaurants (another reason why I chose UCLA is because I couldn't leave the LA food scene).

Bassem Shoucri MD, PhD
Hometown: Los Angeles
Medical School: University of California Irvine
Residency: UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital
Why I chose UCLA: Having been a resident at UCLA, I was familiar with the endocrine faculty and the different hospitals and knew that the clinical training would be excellent. In addition, I knew the division would support my career goals as a physician-scientist and that UCLA is a formidable biomedical research hub with endless opportunities and a rich community of physician-scientists.
Research interests: I am interested in the developmental origins of obesity and type 2 diabetes. As a research fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Tontonoz, I am studying the role of lipids in the link between obesity and diabetes.
Non-research interests: When I’m not at work, I can often be found at the beach or the park with my wife and two daughters.

Hometown: Downey, California
Medical School: College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific
Residency: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
Why I chose UCLA: Everyone I met on interview day was very nice and seemed genuinely happy to be at UCLA. I was drawn by the exposure to diverse populations, with the fellows doing service/ clinic at both UCLA Ronald Reagan (Westwood) and at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital (Long Beach).
Research interests: I am still cultivating a specific research interest but am currently most interested in neuro-oncology and autoimmune endocrinopathies.
Non-research interests: I like visiting any places with a lot of trees! I have too many hobbies I want to try but so far have enjoyed pottery classes, snowboarding, and aerial yoga – all around the greater Los Angeles area.
