The human small intestine and colon harbor a complex microbial ecosystem, collectively called the intestinal microbiome. The Jacobs Laboratory studies how intestinal microbes interact with intestinal cells and the immune system to promote inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and other diseases.
