About

"I have a deep interest in disorders of development, diseases and tumors of childhood. Not only are some diseases unique to children, other conditions present differently and have unique natural history in young patients. Diagnosis and hospital management may be challenging, requiring special resources and expertise in both anatomic pathology and in the clinical laboratory.

After more than 27 years in a multi-hospital community healthcare system and regional children's hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, I have been privileged to return to academic medicine at UCLA. I serve as a key contact for obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine physicians, pediatricians, and pediatric surgical specialists to facilitate interactions with UCLA's organ-focused pathology sub-specialists, and to be an advocate for children's pathology and laboratory services within UCLA Health. I am eager to collaborate with clinical colleagues in their research when pediatric and developmental pathology expertise may be helpful.

In addition to my special interest in pediatric pathology, I continue to enjoy the diversity and challenges of some aspects of adult anatomic pathology. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have practiced both general adult and pediatric pathology, as well as laboratory and transfusion medicine. Among my pediatric pathology colleagues, I have sometimes described myself as being a “partially differentiated” pediatric and perinatal pathologist. At UCLA, I currently provide coverage on the GI and Head and Neck Pathology Services, having served as interim chief of the latter. I also rotate on the Autopsy Service and General Frozen Section Service at Ronald Reagan. I have also provided general pathology coverage at Santa Monica Medical Center.

I am a graduate of the Emory University School of Medicine, and trained in Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Medical Center, Boston. Before my stint in private practice, I was on the faculty of the University of Florida, Jacksonville, where I served as the pathology residency program director. I have been a member of the Children's Oncology Group and its predecessor since 1988. I am a past president of the Society for Pediatric Pathology, and have been a member of the American Board of Pathology's Pediatric Pathology Test Development and Advisory Committee since 2005.  In January 2016, I became a trustee of the American Board of Pathology and served as the president of the Board in 2022.
