Marc R. Nuwer, MD, PhD

Serving as Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Program, Dr. Nuwer joined the UCLA team in the mid-1970s.  He is the first neurologist to develop spinal cord intraoperative monitoring, reducing the risk of surgery by more than 60%.  He went on to pioneer critical care EEG monitoring.  Together with Epileptologist J Engel, they built the first commercial epilepsy monitoring unit.  In each case, these techniques spread from UCLA to worldwide use helping patients.  Along the way, Dr. Nuwer championed an international effort changing EEG from a paper-ink method to a digital method.  In his role in the American Medical Association's policy-making body, he advocates for improvement in medical care across the US.  Based on his roles as a pioneer and champion for many widespread modern techniques and applications, Dr. Nuwer is now recognized internationally as a leader in his field.
